What should be my first Nintendo DS game?
As others have said, it really depends on what you like.
I've got about 20 DS games, myself. New Super Mario Bros. is a great platformer, but so is Yoshi's Island DS. Trauma Center is a really unique experience (a surgery simulation), but it can be very difficult. Zelda:Phantom Hourglass is a very unique take on the Zelda franchise. Metroid Hunters is a great title for FPS fans, but if you like the older 2D Metroid games, then the Castlevania DS games are a lot of fun as well (they're more in the style of Castlevania:SOTN for the PSX, the so-called “Metroid-vania” style of play). Prof. Layton is great for people who like all sorts of brain-bender puzzles – they update the game every week or so with new puzzles to ponder.
The Brain Age games can help sharpen the mind through math and word exercises, and the Sudoku games in Brain Age are better than the stand-alone sudoku games out there. If you like rhythm games, then Elite Beat Agents is a lot of fun, and since you can play import games on the DS without modding, you might even like “Osu! Taekae! Ouendan!” which is the original Japanese version of EBA (although the music is more Jpop and Jrock, unlike EBA which has American Pop music).
Mario Kart DS is a fun little racer game, and it was the very first WFC game – you can race against people from all over the world if you have a WiFi connection.
If you like console-style RPGs, then Pokemon Diamond and Pearl are as addictive as they are popular. There's also the re-releases of FF3 and FF4 (FF4 was originally released as FF2 in the US, and the original FF3 was never released outside of Japan until the DS port).
And then there are the “games that aren't games.” Electroplankton and Jam Sessions are more like musical instruments than games. And Korg is releasing a DS-based port of their MS-10 Electronic Synthesizer. You could start a band using just Nintendo DSs using these “games.”
You might be interested in Gamefly, which is like Netflix, but for video games. Its a rent-by-mail service, no late fees, just a monthly service fee (the fee is based on how many games you want out at a time). Then you can try out as many games as you want, and their used game prices are pretty nice if you decide you want to keep a game you like. They'll ship out the game's original packaging and manuals, and the next game in your rental queue.
