Since my articles about the R4 DS have started to appear online, I have received numerous emails asking me to explain exactly how the R4 DS works. And just general tips and hints from people that already have their R4 DS Units. In an effort to try and help everyone at large, I have put together 4 quick beginners tips for the R4 DS and explain how you first set it up once you receive the R4 DS in your hands.
This is not meant at all to be a comprehensive review of the R4 DS Flash card for the Nintendo DS. There are several online reviews of this item (some by myself, and many by others) that can cover the innner workings and the full feature set of the unit. This is meant simply as a very fast, 5 step quick start guide for those that have received their R4 DS, and want to know, step by step, what they have to do next.
1. The very first thing you have to do is to download the firmware for the R4 DS. You can find this at the official R4 DS website. Just go to the website address listed on the back of your R4 DS Box and enter that website address into your browsers address bar, and you’ll be taken to the official R4 DS Website. You need to have the firmwar file because this will be the very first thing you’re going to copy onto the microSD Card that you’ll use with your R4 DS.
In case you don’t have it already, you’ll also need to go and download WinRar from rarlabs.com as the files required are compressed with the WinRar software. It’s a shareware program that you can download and use without limitation – except for the nag screen asking you to pay for the software.
2. Once you have downloaded the file (and made sure to note where you saved this files) you need to un-compress it using the above mentioned WinRar software. It will create a new folder on your desktop and in that folder will be all of the files you will need. You then need to take these R4 DS firmware / menu system files and copy the entire contents of that folder onto the microSD card that you’ll be using with your R4 DS. Once you have copied these, you can rest assured that any other files you put on the microSD Card to be used with the R4 DS, will show up in a convenient and easy to navigate menu system.
3. Now, the fun part. You’ll have to go an download the games and applications that you want to use with your R4 DS. I say this is the fun part because there are literraly thousands of free homebrew games and applications available online. And, while I don’t condone it, even commercial Nintendo DS Roms that are the full games for Nintendo DS that you can now copy onto the MicroSD and play them from the R4 DS. Just do a quick google search for Nintendo DS homebrew or Nintendo DS Roms and you’ll find that there are hundreds (if not thousands) of web sites that offer up the latest and greates games and applications for the R4 DS.
4. The last and final step is to simply plug the microsd card into the R4 DS and then take it and put it into your nintendo ds consoles. Once you have all of the files for the menus system and the games on the card, you then just have to plug it in and turn on your nintendo ds or dd lite. The NDS will not load the R4 DS card just as it would load a brand new card into the system memory. Once it has loaded it will display for you a menu system, with the GAME option being the very first option on that menu. You just need to press the A button or tap on it with your stylus and you’ll now see a list of the games and applications that you have on your R4 DS. Select the one you want to use / play and away you go. The R4 DS in a matter of just a few second will load up and play the file you have selected.
And that’s it. Just 4 quick and easy steps to go from receiving your R4 DS, to actually putting it into your Nintendo DS and playing anything and everything.
