Onlive Cloud Computing Explained
The OnLive cloud computing service for gaming is a huge technological breakthrough for publishers and gamers alike. Although seven years in the making, this online gaming service was only recently launched and announced at the San Francisco Game Developers Conference. The term “cloud” is a reference to any type of technology or information service that is hosted from a remote location and then delivered over the internet. While many businesses to include email and even PayPal are considered cloud based, OnLive takes it to an entirely new level.
The OnLive cloud computing service consists of a browser plug-in making it possible for a person to play games online and in real time. This means expensive hardware and cumbersome servers have been eliminated. Instead, OnLive servers are housed in five data centers, handling all the heavy work. The end user simply logs onto the internet and immediately has the opportunity to play games online via television, personal computer or Macintosh.
The technology that allows OnLive cloud computing to be so successful is a method of algorithm compression. The normal quick speed of data moving throughout the internet is now improved. In fact, this new OnLive cloud technology is capable of sending 60 frames per second for standard definition graphics with a 1.5 Mbps connection and as much as 720 p using a 5 Mbps connection. Additionally, the OnLive Cloud technology has a very short lag time of only one millisecond between what the gamer sees and what is taking place on OnLive’s servers.
However, technology as a part of OnLive cloud computing goes even further. For gamers that do not want to be stuck sitting in front of a computer as a means of playing games, a small hardware device known as the MicroConsole can be used. This console provides USB inputs and HDMI output, acting as a thin client between the gamer computer and the internet connection. The other option is for the gamer to use a built in web browser, which provides independent functionality.
All of these benefits of OnLive cloud computing are truly amazing but then considering that the end-user has the ability to play games in real time it all becomes even more spectacular. With OnLive, a gamer can choose to play individual or standalone games, or get involved with other players around the globe for interactive games. One

particular feature known as Brag Clips even allows players to save 10-second clips of various game accomplishments, which can then be shared or bragged on.
The actual subscription of OnLive cloud computing for online gaming will not be available until later in the year but expectations are high. With reasonable pricing, no wait time for games to install or download, and fast, high definition games in real time; it is easy to see why the OnLive cloud is making such an impact on the world of online gaming. The best part is that the founder of OnLive, Steve Perlman has even more developments on the horizon, things that will be beneficial to game publishers, creators, and gamers.
